CBETA Map of Texts

CBETA's Chinese Buddhist canon as a multilevel table of contents: the Taishō Tripiṭaka (大正新脩大藏經) volume by volume and category (部) by category, plus the other collections CBETA digitizes beside it. This is what the texts translated on this site sit inside — a division's badge says how much of it is listed here so far, and rows marked read here open the text.

3 groups · 16 branches · 74 divisions · 127 works listed · 20 readable here

EBT-Relevant Texts — a research tag, not a Taishō divisiontag74 of 187 listed4 here

Cross-cutting. Every T-number here also sits inside the collection below; this group gathers the early material scattered across it. Not subdivided by volume — that is what it exists to cut across — so it lists its divisions directly. As further tags emerge (a Mahāyāna sūtra core corpus, Chan primary sources) each can become a group here the same way.

Entire CBETA Taishō Collection (大正新脩大藏經)68 of 2920 listed20 here

The Taishō as CBETA digitizes it: T0001–T2920 across vols. 1–55 and 85, plus the Japanese collection in vols. 56–84. Every T-number belongs to exactly one division below. The count on this header is of numbers listed in these divisions; the ones written out under EBT-Relevant Texts above are counted there instead.

T1579–T1584Yogācāra (瑜伽部): the Yogācārabhūmi complexVol. 30all 6 listed1 here

瑜伽部 — T1579–T1627 across vols. 30–31, continuing through the six divisions below — is the Chinese Yogācāra (Faxiang / 唯識) corpus: the Yogācārabhūmi complex here, the consciousness-only treatises built on Vasubandhu's Triṃśikā and Viṃśatikā, the Mahāyānasaṃgraha in its several translations, and the shorter analytic treatises (Madhyāntavibhāga, Abhidharmasamuccaya, and the Dignāga logic texts) that round out the school's core literature. The bodhisattva-precept extracts drawn from the Bodhisattvabhūmi — 菩薩戒本 and 菩薩戒羯磨文 — are not here: the Taishō prints them with the Vinaya, at T1499–T1501.

Other CBETA Collections (besides the Taishō)59 works listed

CBETA digitizes far more than the Taishō. Each collection below is keyed by its letter prefix, which is the first field of every CBETA citation under it — a work's address is {prefix}{volume}n{work}, so T02n0099 is Taishō vol. 2 work 99 and N06n0004 is 漢譯南傳大藏經 vol. 6 work 4. These collections have their own numbering, so their divisions report what is listed without claiming a total.

Historical canon variants (歷代藏經補輯)0 works listed

Digitized selections from the major historical Chinese canon editions. These overlap heavily with Taishō and Xuzangjing content — their value is textual variants and version history rather than new works.

42 works, Y0001–Y0042 in CBETA's authority database — some 7.54 million characters across about 44 physical volumes. Six works are meaningfully EBT-relevant — they are gathered first — and the bulk of the rest is Mahāyāna doctrine, Chan history and general essays.

How to read this map

T-number ranges are inclusive, and approximate at section boundaries. The Taishō editors sometimes interleaved texts by discovery date rather than by strict topic order, so a division's bounds describe where a category mostly lives, not a guarantee about every number at its edges.

Depth is declared, not implied. Full individual titles exist for every T-number, but transcribing all ~2,920 wholesale would ship guesses for the less-common entries. Each division's badge reports what is actually listed against the size of its range — not yet expanded means no entries have been researched for it yet, and says so rather than leaving you to infer it.

A division that grows too long gets split. The intended shape at full size is more divisions with narrower ranges, not one division with hundreds of rows — the sidebar is the navigation, and it only carries branches and divisions.

"Read here" rows are generated from this site's own registry and so name exactly what is published here. Nothing is offered as readable that isn't.

Citing a work on CBETA

A CBETA address is {prefix}{volume}n{work}: T02n0099 is Taishō vol. 2 work 99 (雜阿含經), N06n0004 is 漢譯南傳大藏經 vol. 6 work 4, LC05n0005_017 adds a within-volume item number. The prefix is what a division's ref shows in the Other CBETA Collections group, so reading a citation off this page is a matter of joining the two. Texts are browsable at cbetaonline.dila.edu.tw.

An ID unverified badge means the title is secure but its catalogue number is not. Several of Yìnshùn's works are securely in his bibliography while their exact CBETA number hasn't been checked; those rows are keyed by the collection prefix alone and flagged, rather than given a plausible number that would be indistinguishable from a verified one. Check before citing.

The two collection groups are siblings, not one inside the other. The Taishō group's claim is T0001–T2920; the other collections carry their own prefixes and numbering, so they report a tally of works listed and assert no total. Nothing here divides one collection's count by another's.

Scope

For the Taishō: CBETA's digitized portion, vols. 1–55 and 85, plus the Japanese collection in vols. 56–84. The iconography volumes (図像部, 12 vols.) and the catalogue volumes (3 vols.) that round out the full 100-volume print edition are outside that set and are not in this tree.

Beyond the Taishō, the historical canon variants (X, A, K, S, F, C, U, P, J, L, G, M) overlap it heavily — their value is textual variants and version history rather than new works. The genuinely distinct material is N, the Pāli Canon in Chinese, and the modern compilations: Yìnshùn's and Lü Cheng's collected works both contain critical studies of the Saṃyuktāgama that bear directly on T0099.

EBT-Relevant Texts is a research tag, not an official Taishō division: it cross-references individual T-numbers that also live inside the volume-based branches. A number listed in both places is one number, and the counts above treat it as one. The plain, citable anchor for a T-number (#t0026) sits on its volume branch — the tag's copy of the row is the cross-reference to it.
